At PEACE NW, we understand that engagement with Special Education can be challenging. The team here at PEACE NW is dedicated to helping families navigate through the IEP process, it is our passion, calling, and responsibility. It’s important to us that parents are treated as the experts on their children, and as such, are afforded respect and empathy. We work to support and educate families, to be the best advocate for their child, to collaborate with schools, to make sure that the supports and materials are appropriate for their child. We work with parents on several key issues:
- Protections and supports available through The Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) and Washington Administrative Codes (WAC)
- Achievable modifications to school work and accommodations to the environment which enable special education students to access their education
- Accommodations that ensure that children with disabilities are instructed alongside their typically developing peers in the general education setting with the supports and encouragements necessary for success
- Understanding the emotional stress that comes with parenting a child with unique social and educational needs
- Trainings that detail how to implement additional ways to involve the school/school district teams in a positive manner to achieve a working relationship
